Aska Trails -- A Hiker's Paradise
Hiking has become my new passion. Those who have known me for years will find this quite amusing. After all, I was the one who agreed to co-lead my daughter's Brownie troop if -- and only if -- I didn't have to camp in a tent or hike. Used to be the thought of hiking conjured up images of bugs, crawly things, and most dreaded of all, sweat. Today it brings me peace, joy, and most welcomed of all, sweat.
I never cease to be grateful to live in an area that has such a wealth ofnatural beauty, and, thanks to the U.S. Forest Service, so many opportunities to immerse myself in that beauty.
Most of my recent hiking has been on the Aska Trails, a 17-mile system of trails in the heart of the Aska Adventure Area in the North Georgia mountains Chattahoochee National Forest, accessed off Aska Road. A hiker can opt for an easy 2.1 mile hike, or a strenuous 3.6 mile hike, or moderate hikes ranging from 1 to 5.7 miles. Or, link them together in any combination. In other words, there is something for every hiker. These trails are also open to mountain bikers.
Trails ascend to over 3,200 feet, and dip to the shoreline of Lake Blue Ridge. Take the Flat Creek Loop, and for most of your journey, you will be serenaded by the soothing sounds of Flat Creek. A hike on the Stanley Gap Trail will reward you with transcendent views of the surrounding mountains, especially in the winter.
One cautionary note...any time you engage on a hike, make sure you know where the trail goes. My husband and I started hiking the Aska Trails using the Flat Creek Loop, which, as its name implies, is a 5.7 mile trail that makes a large loop and drops you off where you started. We have subsequently hiked the loop many times. One afternoon, with my husband away for the day, I decided to try a new trail--the Stanley Gap Trail--by myself. After hiking over 5 miles in the July heat, I was quite ready to get back to my car and head home to my air-conditioned home and a cool shower. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Stanley Gap was not a loop, and that the end of the trail brought me to a dirt road that was many miles away from where I had begun (when I finally figured out where I was). In my naivete, I had assumed that all the trails in the Aska Trails were loops. Being too pooped to walk all the way back, I hitched a ride with some fellow hikers who had been smart enough to have a car at both ends of the trail. Even though they were very nice about it all, I felt like a complete jerk--as I should have. Lesson learned...I can assure you, it won't happen again!

Blue Ridge Market Report -- Say Hello to a Good Buy!!
The first six months of 2010 saw the number of residential sales in Fannin County ahead of 2009's sales, with the median sale price down. There were 199 units sold through June 30th of this year, compared with 148 sold in the same time period last year.
The median residential sale price this year was $185,000. That is down 15% from2009's $216,250, and down a whopping 33% from 2007's high of $277,750.
In practical terms, that means that if you purchased a $300,000 cabin in 2007, you might expect to sell it for $201,000 this year. That's very bad news for sellers, but, oh!, what a time to be a buyer!
Sales of foreclosures made up an ever-increasing percentage of this year's market, 28% compared with 24% of last year's.
Mortgage rates have dropped to historical lows. Couple that with dropping prices, and you have an unprecedented time to buy a home in the North Georgia mountains.

Georgia Mountain Fair WOWS Three Generations!
This year's Georgia Mountain Fair marks it's 60th ANNIVERSARY! This means this wonderful event is providing fun, food, and entertainment to a third generation of fair-goers.
The fair starts this coming Wednesday, July 21, and runs through July 31st. This year's musical acts include Roy Clark, Brenda Lee, the Bellamy Brothers, and Ray Price, to name but a few. Sunday, July 25, will feature a day of inspirational artists including The McKamey's and The Primitives.
Admission to the fair is only $9 per person, $8 on Customer Appreciation Day, July 28th.
The fair is held at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds in the picturesque town of Hiawassee on the shores of beautiful Lake Chatuge.
Hiawassee held its first fair in 1950, a three-day agricultural exposition held at the local high school. Attendees numbered 2,000-actually an impressive number for such a tiny town. Now in its fifty-eighth year, the fair draws crowds from all over the southeast and attendance numbers have approached 100,000 in recent years!
The fair features a multitude of activities and events that run from midway rides, to arts and crafts
booths, to daily concerts, to demonstrations of old mountain ways of life.
Oh, and let us not forget the food. You have a wide-variety of ways to overindulge from standard festival fare-cotton candy, funnel cakes, hot dogs--to mountain favorites like fried pies, home-cooked vegetable plates, smoked trout and fresh-squeezed apple and peach cider.
Robert Anderson Music Hall-named in honor of a former president of the fair-is the venue for live music that ranges from gospel to blues, performances by cloggers and line dancers, and the annua
l Miss Georgia Mountain Fair pageant.
Old-time demonstrations include a working blacksmith shop, a grist mill, a smokehouse, a country store and locals are on hand to show you how to make soap, baskets, and quilts among other skills.
Enjoy a truly wonderful experience at the Georgia Mountain Fair!

Blue Ridge Cabin -- Priceless Garage
Used to be, second-home buyers coming up to the North Georgia mountains were content with a basic cabin with few amentities. Most of the cabins built through the '80s and '90s were fairly rustic affairs with tiny closets and baths, stripped-down kitchens, small rooms, and little else. Simply being able to escape from the city and glory in the finest nature has to offer was incentive enough to come to the mountains. Doing without all the creature comforts was no problem.
Over the past ten years or so, the tastes of buyers have grown more sophisticated, and the cabins being built have reflected those tastes. Features like granite counters, walk-in closets, luxe bathrooms, and outdoor fireplaces have become de-rigeur in higher-end cabins. Another "must-have" for many second-home buyers is a garage.
I currently have a cabin listed that is elegant in every way. It is a spacious, light-filled prow-front design with no amenity overlooked (flyer below), including a 'pimped-out' garage. The homeowner spent over $50,000 on the garage alone! Some of the features of this top-shelf garage are:
- 31' x 32' of insulated space
- 8" thick reinforced concrete floor
- 8' x 18' roll-up door with opener
- Covered mechanic's pit with electrical outlets and upward-directed flood lights
- Air outlets throughout, including in the mechanic's pit
- Overhead fluorescent lighting
- 5000 CFM exhaust fan
- Two overhead fans
- Wired for 220V arc welder or air compressor
- Sink with hot and cold water
- Water softener and iron-filter provides filtered and softened water to garage and house
- Fisher "Mama Bear" wood burning heater with Magic Fan
Elegant mountain cabin . . . $400,000
Garage for hubby to disappear to for hours . . . Priceless

DescriptionLiving the High Life is easy in this three bedroom, three bath cabin oozing with rustic chic.
The home is nestled in a lushly forested gated cabin community. The drive to the cabin is via scenic, paved roads. As you approach the property you are struck by the pleasing exterior of this meticulously maintained home. The beautiful landscaping and wide rocking-chair front porch are a prelude of things to come.
The front door opens and confirms what your instincts have been telling you...this home IS special! The heart of this distinctive cabin is the Great Room, with its soaring prow-style wall of windows, vaulted ceiling, warm all-wood interior, and elegant stack-rock fireplace.
The kitchen is loaded with builder's options -- granite counters, stainless-steel appliances, furniture-grade oak cabinetry, custom task lighting, and a stack-rock and granite center-island -- just right for the chef in the family!
The three bedrooms are all spacious, and two of the three bathrooms have Jacuzzi tubs & tiled showers.
Not to be outdone, the full-finished basement offers warm tongue-and-groove paneling on the walls and ceiling, and a second stack-rock fireplace. A full wet-bar -- complete with keg cooler, tap, bar fridge & ice machine -- invites you to sit and wet your whistle. But, then again, maybe you'll want to "rack 'em" for a friendly game of eight-ball on the pool table that stays with the house.
Outside, on the wrap-around deck, you see another opportunity to enjoy a pleasant diversion--the hot tub that is perfect for savoring the beautiful mountain and pasture views. A fenced enclosure and cabin-style doghouse ensure that Fido is just as comfy as you are!
The detached garage completes the perfection that is Wilscot Winds. The oversized space (31X32) has ample & thoughtfully planned storage space. The best part of all? The covered mechanic's pit in one of the bays, a feature that is an exceedingly rare amenity in mountain get-aways!Features

DescriptionJust a two-hour drive from Atlanta, yet a million miles away from the 'big-city' lifestyle.
This cabin is unique in all of the North Georgia Mountains! One of only a small handful of cabins in a tiny pocket nestled between thousands of acres of COHUTTA WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT DISTRICT & US FOREST SERVICE, this remote -- yet elegant -- retreat is truly a one-of-a-kind. Pristine CONASAUGA CREEK cascades by, singing its lovely water lullaby just feet from the cabin. Virgin forest -- lush with rhododendrons, mountain laurel and native azaleas -- forms a majestic canopy overhead. Renowned for its trout-filled waters, crystal-clear JACKS RIVER sparkles nearby.
The cabin itself has been completely renovated and outfitted by a prominent local artist, so while it may be remote, it is quite elegantly civilized. The main floor features a bedroom, FULL BATH, spacious kitchen and wonderful Great Room with a wood-burning stove. Rounding out the interior is a delightful sleeping loft.
The cabin's exterior features two decks around the cabin, plus two detached decks -- one with a real tepee!! -- to expand your entertainment space. There is gentle access to Conasauga Creek all along its banks.
